Background of the Study
Makoda Local Government Area (LGA), located in the northern part of Kano State, faces significant challenges in transport infrastructure development, largely influenced by geopolitical considerations. The region, while strategically positioned to benefit from trade routes connecting neighboring states, has been historically underserved in terms of transport infrastructure. This gap in infrastructure development has been further complicated by political dynamics, such as political party affiliations, state-level power struggles, and inter-regional competition for resources (Aliyu & Bello, 2024). The lack of a comprehensive and coordinated transport policy, influenced by local and state-level geopolitical interests, has hindered Makoda’s ability to fully capitalize on its potential as a trade hub. This study aims to examine how geopolitical considerations shape transport infrastructure development in Makoda LGA and assess the impact of political and economic factors on the region's transport projects.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite its strategic location, Makoda LGA has lagged in the development of essential transport infrastructure. Political rivalries, lack of coordinated governance, and competition for resources at the state and local levels have led to delays and inefficiencies in the execution of transport projects. This study seeks to explore how these geopolitical issues influence the planning and development of transport infrastructure in Makoda LGA.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  • To examine the role of geopolitical considerations in the development of transport infrastructure in Makoda LGA.

  • To assess the impact of political and economic factors on the allocation of resources for transport projects.

  • To propose strategies for overcoming geopolitical challenges in improving transport infrastructure in Makoda LGA.

1.4 Research Questions

  • How do political rivalries and state-level power dynamics influence transport infrastructure development in Makoda LGA?

  • What role do local and regional stakeholders play in shaping transport infrastructure projects in the area?

  • How can geopolitical challenges be addressed to improve the development of transport infrastructure in Makoda LGA?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  • Geopolitical factors, such as political competition, negatively affect the timely development of transport infrastructure in Makoda LGA.

  • Political and economic priorities influence the allocation of resources for transport projects in the region.

  • Effective coordination between local, state, and federal governments can improve transport infrastructure despite geopolitical challenges.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it will provide a deeper understanding of the political and geopolitical factors that shape transport infrastructure development in Makoda LGA. The findings will inform policymakers and urban planners about the need for more coordinated and transparent governance processes that account for local and regional political dynamics, with implications for regional economic development (Aliyu & Bello, 2024).

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on transport infrastructure development in Makoda LGA, Kano State, within the broader context of regional geopolitical influences. Limitations include challenges in accessing comprehensive transport data and potential biases in information from political sources.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Geopolitical Considerations: Political, economic, and social factors that influence decision-making at the local and regional levels.

  • Transport Infrastructure Development: The planning, construction, and maintenance of roads, railways, and other transport systems.

  • Makoda Local Government Area: A region in Kano State with strategic economic potential but facing challenges in infrastructure development (Aliyu & Bello, 2024).
